Cannavaro ruled out of Euro 2008 June 2, 2008

Italy’s Euro Cup chances took a severe blow today as their captain and best defender, Fabio Cannavaro, was injured in training.  Cannavaro suffered ligament damage to his left ankle after a 50/50 challenge with Juventus defender, Giorgio Chiellini.  At first, coaches and players continued to play since “diving” is usally a vital part of practice for the Italians….ha I’m sorry I couldn’t help it.  Anyway, he was taken to a hospital and it is now official that the ankle injury will require surgery and Cannavaro will unfortunately not take part in the Euro’s this Summer.  Coach Donadoni will name a replacement today which is likely to be Fiorentina central defender, Alessandro Gamberini.

Italy will really miss Cannavaro’s presence and leadership on the field.  He is the captain of the Azzurri for good reason, and along with goalie Gianluigi Buffon, this is a player that the Italians coudn’t afford to lose.  This is football though and injuries happen to all teams.  Does this news take Italy out of the running for the Euro Cup?  Let us know what you think.

Tough blow for the Italian squad. Not only will they need to replace him on the field, they need to replace his presence. An injury right before a tournament can have a significant mental effect on a team. It will be interesting to see them try and respond.
