It’s called Emotion May 9, 2008

Its amazing that baseball players have to be unemotional statues.  Can someone let me know when it became wrong to show emotion in sport?  Cause I sure as hell don’t know.  I thought the whole point was to play with your emotions and your heart on your sleeve?  Why does Joba get criticized for a fist pump after a strikeout to end an inning?  I really dont see how it is any different from numerous other sports atheltes celebrating.

Can someone tell me why Tiger Woods can pump his fist after sinking a big putt, with one of his competitors on the green?  Nobody says anything.  Why can a wide receiver or tight end make a big catch, get tackled, get up and point down the field for a first down with his opponent right next to him? Nobody makes a big deal.  Why can a basketball player throw one down at a big moment and then start celebrating and yelling into the crowd?  Still no criticism.  Why can a soccer player score a goal and then slide into the corner, have his teammates shine his shoe, or run towards the sideline and get mobbed by his teammates on the bench?  Still looking for that criticism.

Oh yea there is none.  It’s a double standard for baseball and its ridiculous.  People in baseball are babies.  End of story.  David Delucci?  Worry about your own game.

I completely agree. Baseball has become way too soft for my liking. I know it can be argued that it’s always been that way and that’s the way it should be now, but this is getting ridiculous. I’m a huge baseball and Yankee fan but get annoyed at situations like this when even showing emotion is being questioned.

In this case, you have a young dynamic pitcher, Joba Chamberlain, who gave up the lead and his first runs allowed at Yankee stadium this past Tuesday against the Cleveland Indians, off a homerun by David Delucci. Joba was clearly distraught and unhappy about his performance. Then comes yesterday, Joba is in a similar situation where it his job to keep the lead so the Yankees can hand the ball over to Mo to close out the game. The opponent? Cleveland Indians. The batter? David Delucci. Now you cannot tell me a young pitcher like Joba wasn’t out to prove something and rebound from Tuesday’s performance. Why can’t he be excited about his rebound performance? He was allowed to show frustration on Tuesday but cant be excited and do a fist pump when he does something good?

Again, the only knock I have on baseball is how soft it has become. I won’t even get started on Farnsworth being suspended 3 games for throwing behind Manny Ramirez. He didn’t even hit him! What’s next. getting suspended for throwing too hard? Ridiculous. But that’s another topic for another day. For now, let’s just allow athletes to be athletes. There is a difference between showboating and emotion….football players celebrating after EVERY tackle they make is a bit over the top…but what Joba did was emotion and normal.

Lets throw tennis players in there too. Oh wait Mad dog says they dont show emotion. BS! All they do is fist pump, argue about calls, break rackets, and Nadal falls on the ground when he wins. And this is coming from someone who loves Nadal cause hes Spanish. Yea baseball players didnt use to do it, and the NBA didnt have a 3 point line, when the NFL started they didnt throw the football, and they changed every rule in hockey cause they hate the Devils winning. Things Change. Alot of the time for the better.

excellent points across the board. Its almost like people forget that sports are meant to be competitive. You need to have a winner and a loser, and its ok for both sides to get a little emotional when this happens. To be honest with you I may question why they are doing this if they don’t feel the emotion. They work hard and bust their asses to be the best to be in this position and when they accomplish it if there was no emotion whats the point of doing it. So i say pump your fist yell a little bit it was a job well done. Although this is coming from a guy who yells and fist pumps when I get a Strike on Wii bowling. By the way I completely agree with the NHL changing all the rules because they have the Devils….and its a god damn shame.
